"This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph, her fiance, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly." ~ Matthew 1:18-19
Mary was engaged (betrothed) to Joseph. A Jewish betrothal was just as binding as our modern marriage, so for Mary to be pregnant, would indeed be seen as adultery, a true disgrace to Joseph. I love how the Bible tells us Joseph was a good man, other versions read: a just or righteous man. I'm sure Joseph was deeply hurt at the news of Mary, and he had all the rights to publicly humiliate her and even have her stoned, yet he did not want to disgrace her. Truly it's a beautiful picture. He could have everything taken from her, yet he wanted to give her the chance of life.
Heavenly Father, thank you for second chances. Although we know the rest of this story and we know Mary was carrying Jesus, Joseph's justly response to what he thought was sin, is a picture of Your mercy. I'm so grateful for Your mercy, even though I don't deserve it. I love You, Lord. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.
For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. "
